What is Music Therapy?

Music Therapy is an established psychological clinical intervention, delivered by HCPC registered music therapists to help people whose lives have been affected by injury, illness or disability through supporting their psychological, emotional, cognitive, physical, communicative and social needs. (From the British Association of Music Therapists)

Music Therapy is:

A means of connection for those who struggle with verbal communication.

A way to work with complex emotions with care and support.

A way for people to discover new abilities and new things about themselves.

A way to access the innate joy of music making with guidance from a caring professional.

A way to bring people together and strengthen communities.

FAQs

Common Questions

What does a music therapy session look like?

Music therapy is all about the client/s and therapist creating music together in whichever way is most helpful for the client. This can mean anything from singing and playing instruments together to digital music making and recording. As the thereputic relationship develops, opportunities for different kinds of music making grow.

What sorts of sessions do you offer?

I offer both individual and group sessions. Individual sessions last for 30-45 minutes. Group sessions can range from 2 to to 10+ clients and usually last for 45-60 minutes.

I have experience running large drop-in group sessions with 10+ clients.

Who can music therapy help?

I believe everyone is capable of making music so anyone can benefit from shared music making.

I have worked with a wide range of clients including children with learning difficulties and limitied verbal communication, adults with mental health difficulties and people living with dementia.

As a person-centred music therapist I believe in treating everyone as an individual. Together we discover the ways music can improve a client's wellbeing.
